It was PBA win No. 3 for Parker Bohn III, while PB IV watched. Bohn was the leading qualifier in the $200,000 Don Carter Classic In this New Orleans suburb, and he came away with a 214-191 victory against non-winner Mike Edwards at host Don Carter's All Star Lanes-Kenner. Bohn, Freehold, N.J., opened the championship game by facing the 7-10 split, which he failed to convert, as Edwards, Tulsa, Okla., opened with a four-bagger. Bohn answered with a double, spare, double, and then Edwards faced a 7-10 of his own in his seventh frame. An open ninth frame by Edwards then allowed Bohn the chance to shut him out and Bohn was up to the task, closing with a four-bagger for the $39,000 top prize. In the opening game of the ABC-televised championship round, Jeff Bellinger was handed the match by Steve Wunderlich of St. Louis, 162-159, when Wunderlich left the 7-10 on his first 10th-frame shot. Bellinger, Columbia, S.C., then took advantage of that gift by eliminating 1989 PBA Player of the Year Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, 236-200. Edwards overcame back-to-back open frames in frames in starting the semifinal game to topple Bellinger, 225-191.
