$150,000 QUAKER STATE OPEN
Forum Bowling Lanes, Grand Prairie, Texas, Jan 30-Feb 3, 1990

Pedersen: One Tough Champion

Randy Pedersen advanced through four matches to collect his eighth PBA championship in the 14th annual $150,000 Quaker State Open at Forum Bowling Lanes. Pedersen, Santa Maria, Calif., dumped leading qualifier Don Genalo, Perrysburg, Ohio, 201-167, for the $28,000 first prize.

Both players started slowly in the title game as Pedersen opened in his first two frames, while Genalo stayed clean with spares through six frames and didn't strike until his first shot of the 10th frame. By then the outcome was decided as Pedersen mustered a three-bagger starting In the sixth frame and closed with a turkey.

In the opening game of the ABC Sports-televised finals, Pedersen blasted first-time finalist Tim Weisbrod of Cincinnati, Ohio, 268-156. Next up was reigning PBA Player of the Year Amleto Monacelli, the Venezuelan making his third consecutive championship round appearance, and for the third week he also came away empty-handed, 230-208.

In the semifinal, two-time Quaker State Open champ Hugh Miller lost for the first time at Forum Bowling Lanes, 224-207, to deny the Seattle, Wash., pro his fifth title.

The biggest benefactor of the tournament again was the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children, which now has realized more than $150,000 from tournament proceeds.
