Seven-year PBA member Chris Warren of Dallas earned his first championship and a berth into the Firestone Tournament of Champions via his 210-188 conquest of Steve Cook in the $125,000 ARC Pinole Open at host Pinole Valley Lanes. Visually, the championship game was a mismatch, with 6-foot-7, 260-pound Cook, of nearby Roseville, facing off against the 5-foot-5, 115-pound Warren. Warren trailed by at least nine pins most of the match, but after both finalists opened in the sixth frame, Warren came back with a strike, spare and four-bagger. Still, Cook faced the 10th frame needing a double to clinch his 15th title, only to strand a 6-pin on his first shot, relegating the local favorite to the $10,500 runnerup's payday. The ABC Sports-televised finals began with 1989 PBA Player of the Year Amleto Monacelli edging '88 PBA Player of the Year Brian Voss, Boca Raton, Fla., 277-265, as Monacelli closed with 10 strikes. Monacelli, Venezuela, then opened with a six-bagger in disposing of Don Genalo, Perrysburg, Ohio, 268-173. Cook then entered and seemed to steal Monacelli's momentum in sending him to the sidelines, 258-208.
