Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela captured his third title of the year and moved to second place on the PBA's 1989 earnings list via his victory in the $150,000 Budweiser Touring Players Championship at Taylor Lanes. Monacelli topped third-seeded Brian Voss, 235-209, for the $27,000 first prize and his fifth PBA championship. For Voss, Boca Raton, Fla., it was his second consecutive week as tournament runner-up. The reigning PBA Player of the Year said, "As much as I would have liked to win, Amleto really deserved to win after bowling so well." In the opening game of the NBC Sports-televised finals, Tom Baker, Buffalo, N.Y., was seeking his first victory in three years when he bounced fifth-seeded Troup, Daytona Beach, Fla., 171-161, in one of the fastest matches ever bowled. Baker then fell at the hands of Voss, 248-225, and Voss then defeated Bob Handley, Pompano Beach, Fla., 257-216. Voss started the semifinal game with a six-bagger and Handley was seeking respect after a woeful showing one week prior In the Milwaukee Classic championship round, where he bowed in a rolloff, 50-8, after tying eventual champ Dave Ozio at 162.
