David Ozio felt there was a great deal to be thankful for after collecting his fifth PBA championship in the $125,000 Milwaukee Classic at host Red Carpet Celebrity Lanes. Ozio advanced from the fourth-seeded position and topped leading qualifier Brian Voss, 236-226, for the $18,000 first prize. The championship game was tightly contested throughout, as Voss never led after opening with a spare, while Ozio struck, spared and strung a five-bag or. Voss came back with a four-bagger of his own, but when he failed to strike in his ninth frame, Ozio needed only to mark in his 10th frame to secure the victory. In the opening game of the NBC Sports-televised finals, Ozio, Vidor, Texas, defeated Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, 248-189. Ozio then bumped newlywed (three weeks earlier) Mark Baker, Huntington Beach, Calif., 196-166. The semifinal game was a struggle for both Ozio and Bob Handley, Pompano Beach, Fla., who tied at 162 after regulation. Handley was the first player up in the two-frame rolloff, but when Handley chopped the 2-4-5 immediately, and Ozio tripled, it was all over 50-8.
