Tapp Tops Toyota

Charlie Tapp capped his personal "comeback" year with a 228-190 victory over Marshall Holman in the inaugural $105,000 Toyota Classic at Tropicana Lanes Saturday. Tapp, Kalamazoo, Mich., collected his third PBA championship and the $27,000 first prize and re-qualified for the Firestone Tournament of Champions.

A frustrated Holman, Medford, Ore., earned $14,000 for his 30th second-place finish in 100 championship round appearances and he said, "I can't believe I've actually won 21 titles - It seems I'm the perennial runnerup." Holman's career record in TV matches now stands at 58-80.

Both finalists opened the title game with strikes, end Holman then tacked on five consecutive spares before doubling. Tapp spared in his second frame, doubled, spared again, and then tossed a three-bugger, with several fortunate carries along the way.

In the opening NBC Sports-televised game, Don Genalo defeated yearly money leader Mike Aulby, Indianapolis, 236-180. Aulby's $5,000 fifth-place payday pushed the new father's (he and his wife Tami welcomed son Christopher Jay one month earlier on Friday the 13th) 1989 earnings to $287,215. Ron Palombi Jr. then entered to dispose ofGenalo, Perrysburg, Ohio, 235-225, before Palombi, Erie, Pa., fell to Holman In the semifinal, 245-170.
