Canadian Am Has Pros' Number
Kevin West, Canadian amateur bowler from Toronto, fought past four of the PBA Tour's top players to claim the Number 7 PBA Invitational. West defeated defending champion Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., 192-188, in the title match and collected $7,000 as the first prize from the Canadian amateur's prize fund, while Ferraro pocketed $20,000 from the pros' prize fund. This third annual single-elimination format tournament at Silver Dollar Action Centre bracketed 12 top PBA Tour stars with four Canadian amateurs. The event was taped by Canadian TV for rebroadcast as a series of 15 one-half hour telecasts, sponsored Rothmans Benson 8 Hedges and their Number 7 cigarette brand. Tony Westlake, Oklahoma City, earned second-place PBA money of $13,000 after yielding to Ferraro in the semifinal, 191-187. Venezuela's Amleto Monacelli bowed to West in the other semifinal and he took home third-place PBA earnings of $7,500 via his lower score in an 188-148 loss.
