Senior/Touring Pro Doubles Championship

$142,500 SENIOR/TOURING PRO DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
Thruway Lanes, Buffalo, N.Y., Aug 12-16, 1989

McDowell/Weber Double(S) Fun

Given a second opportunity, Dick Weber and Marc McDowell took full advantage and captured the $142,500 PBA Senior/Touring Pro Doubles Championship at host Thruway Lanes. Weber and Touring Pro partner McDowell advanced from the third-seeded position and knocked off leading qualifiers Jimmy Certain and Brian Voss, 249-228, to share the $28,000 first prize.

"Our plan was to let Marc anchor regardless of the situation," Weber said. "Ironically, this reminded me of a similar situation two years ago when Dennis Jacques opened In the 10th frame to allow us second life and go for the title."

In the opening game of the ESPN telecast, Les Zikes, Palatine, Ill., and Touring Pro partner Ron Palombi Jr. of nearby Erie, Pa., topped Senior pro Teata Semiz, Waneque, N.J., and last week's LaMode Classic winner, Jim Pencak of Mayfield Hts., Ohio, 205-188. Zikes and Palombi seemed to have things well in hand In their next match against Weber and McDowell, but Zikes left the 1-3-8 on his first shot in the 10th frame, needing only a spars to advance, and missed the conversion to fall, 192-182.

In the semifinal game, Weber/McDowell went up early as Senior John Handegard of Redding, Calif., and partner Dennis Rakauskas, Clarks Summit, Pa., suffered back-to-back opens In their third and fourth frames to bow, 207-179.
