Jim Pencak of Mayfield Hts., Ohio, captured his first PBA title here in the $125,000 LaMode Classic at host Red Carpet Lanes. Fourth-seeded Pencak defeated leading qualifier Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., 231-216, for the $18,000 first prize and earned an Invitation to the 1990 Firestone Tournament of Champions at nearby Fairlawn, Ohio. The championship game was tight throughout until Pencak opened in his seventh frame, falling to convert the 4-6-7 split and allowing Ferraro an opportunity to put some distance between the two. Ferraro then doubled, but Pencak answered with a four-bagger and nine-count to force Ferraro to double and four-count for the victory. He left the 2-pin on his first shot In the 10th frame for his third runnerup finish of '89, but the $9,500 consolation check did push his yearly earnings over $100,000. Pencak said, "If Dave would've thrown three strikes to beat me I would've offered the biggest congratulations to him because I knew I did the best I could. I felt the crowd got behind me because my emotions out and the fans seemed to like that. I told my friends this year I was going to win, and that was after I had gone eight weeks without a check!"Ferraro obviously was disappointed and said, "At least I had a chance to win this time, but I wish I could throw the shots again. I guess it wasn't my destiny."
