Joe Salvemini broke a six-year PBA victory drought by upending leading qualifier Dave Ferraro, 248-216, in the $130,000 Columbia 300 Open at Highland Lanes. For Salvemini Colorado Springs, Colo., ft was a $20,000 payday and PBA victory number throe, and for Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., a third frustrating runnerup finish this year. Both finalists spared and struck in their first two frames and Ferraro tacked on two more strikes to lead by 21 pins after four frames. Ferraro left a solid 10-pin in the fifth and struck in his sixth frame while Salvemini struck out from his sixth frame, including a crucial crumbling of the 6-7-10 on his first 10th-frame shot, which clinched the title. "I kept telling everyone, 'I'm going to win again, soon,' " Salvemini said. "Now I'm back where I belong - in the Firestone." Four weeks earlier, Salvemini was runnerup to Jess Stayrook in the Seattle Open, "But I was calmer there than here and I made a mental mistake in Seattle which cost me." In the first game of the ESPN-televised finals Bryan Goebel, Merriam, Kan., topped Venezuela's Amleto Monacelli, 237-211. Salvemini then entered and disposed of Goebel, 196-190, and then last week's El Paso Open champ, Tony Westlake of Edmond, Okla., 214-196, in the semifinal. Columbia 300, Inc., a PBA Tour sponsor since 1972, announced their renewal for the 1990 tournament here at host Highland Lanes and will produce a commemorative bowling ball for the 10th annual tournament In Austin.
