Tony Westlake first had to beat his best friend on tour and then topped leading qualifier Del Ballard Jr., 249-214, in the championship game of the $130,000 El Paso Open at host Bowl El Paso. It was the second PBA championship for Westlake, Edmond, Okla., who also re-qualified for the Firestone Tournament of Champions in pocketing the $20,000 first prize. "In my past three telecasts I haven't had any breaks and when I left a solid 10-pin in the fifth frame of the title game, I thought, 'Here we go again,' but then Del left the 7-10. If you let the breaks effect you, they'll hurt you later on,' Westlake said. Both finalists matched spares and strikes in their opening two frames and Ballard appeared to have matters well In hand through six frames until his disastrous 7-10 in the seventh. Westlake Immediately capitalized on the opportunity by closing with a five-bagger and nine on his last six shots to coast in. Ballard shrugged off his falling short of a fourth title on the year by saying, "$10,500 is nothing to sneeze at - I'm just glad to be throwing the ball better. Even if I had won here, I think I'd still need to win another title to be considered a challenger against Mike Aulby for PBA Player of the Year." This tournament marked the PBA Tour's first return to El Paso in 18 years and defending champion of that tournament, J.B. Blaylock, now a competitor on the PBA's Senior Tour, finished 45th here, good for $835.
