Amleto Monacelli ended a frustrating period of 18 months without a victory by collecting his third PBA championship in the $140,000 Miller Lite Challenge at Golden Pin Lanes. Monacelli, of Venezuela, defeated Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., 243-173, for the $2,000 first prize and halted his skein of 11 winless championship round appearances since capturing the 1988 Showboat Invitational In Las Vegas. "I played a different angle than during the week - a lot straighter line," Monacelli said. "I feel I got some breaks today and lust tried to stay relaxed. I've learned from experience to make an adjustment if the shot does not appear the same," he said. Monacelli established a PBA record earlier in the week in tossing his seventh 300 game of 1989 on Tour, besting Guppy Troup's 10-year mark of six. Monacelli also had three perfect games this week en route to nailing down the leading qualifier position by more than 300 pins. The championship game did not start off in striking fashion for either finalist as Husted proved to be the first player to strike in his fourth frame. However, Monacelli led by 18 pins at that point due to Husted's open first and third frames. When Monacelli finally struck in the sixth, it was the first of a six-bagger and Husted never threatened. This tournament saw nine 300 games and eight 299's, of which Amleto and Rodolfo Monacelli and Tony Westlake claimed three In the 11th game of qualifying. This was the fourth year of Miller Lite's tournament sponsorship and the PBA Tour's 28th visit to Tucson, making it second in tournament longevity to Las Vegas' Showboat Invitational, which completed its 30th consecutive competition this winter.
