Crites Cruises In Kessler Classic

Tom Crites closed with nine strikes In the semifinal game and then escaped with his fifth PBA championship following a 202-191 title game victory against David Ozio in the $135,000 Kessler Classic at Active West Town Square Lanes.

Crites, Tamps, Fla., survived an open ninth frame in the championship match, which handed leading qualifier Ozio the opportunity to strike out in his 10th and force Crites to double. Ozio, Beaumont, Texas, struck on his first 10th-frame shot, and then left the 4-6-7-10 "Big Four," which he failed to convert. Crites dedicated his victory to his late brother Ronni who was killed last fall in an automobile accident. It was an emotional win for Tom's mother, Vera, who watched her son bowl in the championship round for just the second time in his career. Her first such experience was for Tom's victory in the 1987 Budweiser Touring Players Championship at Taylor, Mich. Crites had been distracted in his ninth frame and took a longer time to set himself before leaving the 1-2-4-10 "washout," which he nearly converted.

In the first game of the ESPN televised finals, Curtis Odom, Winston-Salem, N.C., stopped Tony Westlake, Edmond, Okla., 206-163. Odom then advanced past first-time finalist Bryan Goebel, Merriam, Kan., 226-183. In the semifinal game, Odom started with a four-bagger while Crites spare struck and opened before launching his closing nine-bagger to gain the victory, 256-245, and the championship game shot opposite Ozio.
