Mike Aulby captured his 15th PBA championship and $27,000 by rolling past three opponents, including leading qualifier Curtis Odom, 195-182, In the $150,000 Showboat Atlantic City Open. Only a dozen players have won more than 15 titles in PBA history. Aulby, Indianapolis, closed with a four-bagger and overcame two open frames in defeating Odom, Winston-Salem N.C., who was making his first appearance in championship round competition. Odom started with a strike, then missed a four-pin leave in his second frame, but quickly recovered and led by 20 pins through eight frames. Aulby failed to convert the 3-7 split in his eighth and sat down after striking in the ninth to allow Odom to finish first. Surprisingly, Odom left the 3-10 "baby split" on his first 10th-frame shot and failed to convert, which opened the door for Aulby's closing heroics. "It was one of those situations you dream about,' Aulby said. "I just hoped Curtis wouldn't strike and give me an opportunity to win - I never thought he'd open.' Aulby also tied a PBA record in advancing to the championship after qualifying for match play in 24th place. Odom appeared collected afterward and said, "I really only made a couple of bad shots, but I didn't want to give a player of Aulby's character that opportunity.'
