"It started looking like this would never happen again," Wayne Webb said upon breaking a four-year PBA victory drought in the $150,000 True Value Open at Landmark Recreation Center. Webb topped leading qualifier Amleto Monacelli, 216-207, for his 17th PBA crown and first since claiming back-to-back wins at Milwaukee and Baltimore in 1985. "Since then, nothing good seems to have happened to me and everything has been good for my opponents," Webb continued. "I was so scared in the 10th frame I almost couldn't throw the ball. Ironically, it didn't seem like I had a good shot in the practice session today." Both finalists opened with strikes in the championship game and Venezuela's Monacelli added another before sparing and then tacking on a three-bagger. Webb came back with three spares, struck and then spared again to trail by 26 pins through six frames. Monacelli appeared to be sailing smoothly, but then opened by leaving the 2-4-10 split and failed to convert. Webb, Beaumont, Texas, immediately buoyed with new life and answered with three strikes and Monacelli never recovered. In the opening game, two-time 1989 champion Del Ballard Jr., Richardson, Texas, saw a nine-game championship round winning streak stopped at the hands of Jack Jurek, 268-226. Jurek, Lackawanna, N.Y., then was defeated by 1985 PBA Player of the Year Mike Aulby, 256-192. Aulby, Indianapolis, then lost his momentum against 1980 PBA Player of the Year Webb, 236-176.
