Through the first five tournaments of 1989, fans may have asked, "'Where's ('88 PBA Player of the Year) Brian Voss?" The answer two weeks later is, "on top of the PBA Tour again and ahead of last year's record setting money earnings pace." Leading qualifier Voss captured his second consecutive title with a convincing 245-223 victory over Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the $200,000 Don Carter's All-Star Lanes-Harvey. The championship game got off to a rousing start, as both '88 PBA Player of the Year Williams and Voss were perfect following the first three frames. After sparing in his fourth, Voss then strung a four-bagger and Williams could muster just three more strikes the remainder of their game. Williams, Stockton, Calif., defeated Tony Westlake, Edmond, Okla., in the first game, 207-194. He then gained a little revenge in eliminating Parker Bohn III, Freehold, N.J., 222-191. Bohn and Williams tied for third place following the tournament's position round (42nd) game, and Bohn prevailed in a roll-off game to gain the higher-seeded spot. In the semifinal game, Williams' momentum continued and he ousted Houston's Pete McCordic, 255-204. All five finalists had been known to ride a hot streak and each had enjoyed weeks of dominance in recent years. On this day, though, Voss re-asserted his presence as King of the Hill, which has become a very familiar perspective for the Seattle, Wash., pro.
