Del Ballard Jr. again rose to the occasion in a 56-game format tournament, capturing the 30th anniversary $175,000 Showboat Invitational, the PBA Tour's longest continuing national tournament sponsorship, 245-224, against leading qualifier Bob Benoit. The three-game march to his $33,000 victory was Ballard's third PBA title and third win In a PBA national championship format. Ballard said of his uncanny success in longer format tournaments, "I have more time to adjust from previous rounds. No more rabbits," he continued, in reference to his exemption from pro-tournament qualifying competition.
