Ballard Bags 30th Showboat

Del Ballard Jr. again rose to the occasion in a 56-game format tournament, capturing the 30th anniversary $175,000 Showboat Invitational, the PBA Tour's longest continuing national tournament sponsorship, 245-224, against leading qualifier Bob Benoit. The three-game march to his $33,000 victory was Ballard's third PBA title and third win In a PBA national championship format.

Ballard said of his uncanny success in longer format tournaments, "I have more time to adjust from previous rounds.

No more rabbits," he continued, in reference to his exemption from pro-tournament qualifying competition.

The ABC Sports-televised championship round began with fifth-seeded Joss Stayrook, San Diego, Calif., eliminating Dallas' Chris Warren, 225-210. Making his first televised appearance of his sight-year career, Stayrook then bowed to Ballard 224-205Next up was familiar face Parker Bohn III, Freehold, N.J., who was making his third consecutive championship finals appearance, but was frustrated again as Ballard turned him away In the semifinal game, 234-181.
