Ernie Schlegel climbed past four opponents and overcame a 15-minute electrical breakdown to capture the $125,000 ARC Pinole Open at host Pinole Valley Lanes. He stopped leading qualifier Dave D'Entremont of Cleveland, 268-215, for the $18,000 first prize and his fifth PBA championship. Schlegel's win was his first title since 1985 and kicked off the 1989 PBA Tour for the 28th consecutive year on ABC-TV. Schlegel, Vancouver, U.S.A., began the final game with a five-bagger and led D'Entremont by 31 pins before sparing in his sixth and seventh frames. He then book-ended another five-bagger to improve his four-game average to 244. In the semifinal game Ron Williams, Cahokia, Ill., opened with a four-bagger and spare against Schlegel, who struck, spare, and tacked on a three-bagger when the lights went out. Approximately 15 minutes later, play continued and Schlegel added two more strikes, while Williams had a mental lapse and failed to convert the 10-pin in his seventh frame. Williams regrouped with a five-bagger but fell short, as Schlegel was equal to the challenge and turned back Williams' spurt with a closing four-bagger to clinch, 259-253.
