Third Of The Year For Berardi

Joe Berardi became the PBA Tour's only three-time winner of 1988 with his 247-211 victory against Don Genalo in the $135,000 True Value Open. In pocketing the $21,000 first prize at host Woodland Bowl, leading qualifier Berardi also topped the $100,000 mark in yearly earnings for the first time of his 16-year career while becoming the PBA's only current nine-time champion and record ninth player to have surpassed the six-digit mark in a year.

Newly relocated to Wellington, Fla., from Brooklyn, N.Y., Berardi began the title game with an open frame (failing to convert the 4-7-9-10), spared, and then unleashed a six-bagger. Genalo, Perrysburg, Ohio, stayed close and still had a chance for victory until Berardi closed with three 10th-frame strikes to clinch the win.

The five championship round finalists totaled 57 PBA titles amongst themselves. In the opening game, Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., defeated Bob Handley, Pompano Beach, Fla., 235-192, in Handley's first televised finals appearance of the year. Husted then fell to 33-time winner Mark Roth, Spring Lake Heights, N.J., 228-211. Genalo was red-hot against Roth, striking nine times, including a closing four-bagger to advance to the championship game, 247-218. All five finalists finished in the exact position where they had qualified following the previous night's position round.
