After having waited more than six years for his first PBA victory, the second win came just four weeks later for Sam Maccarone. Top-seeded, Maccarone defeated Brian Voss, 208-162, to capture the $130,000 Molson Golden Bowling Challenge. He joins Voss, Mark Williams, Pete McCordic and Joe Berardi as the PBA Tour's only two-time winners this year. Maccarone, Glassboro, N.J., opened the championship game with a strike and never looked back. Voss also began with a strike, spared and then suffered back-to-back open frames. Maccarone struck in his fifth frame to extend his lead to 25 pins and coasted home with the $20,000 first prize. The opening game at host Rose Bowl began with Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., coming from behind to defeat Joe Firpo, Lake Worth, Fla., 223-206. Voss, Tacoma, Wash., then entered the fray and strung four strikes late in his game with Ferraro to advance, 213-204. Ferraro's appearance marked the seventh consecutive time he has qualified for the championship round with Voss. Voss also came from behind in the semifinal game against Purvis Granger, Lafayette, La., after Granger missed a 7-pin in the eighth frame and then opened again in the 10th. Voss took advantage of the opportunity and prevailed, 211-182.
