Making his sixth championship round appearance of the year, Dave Husted came through with his first title of 1988, defeating Joe Berardi, 233-191, in the final game of the $125,000 LaMode Classic. Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., played an extreme inside line and used a different ball on each lane of the championship pair en route to claiming the $18,000 top prize at Red Carpet Lanes-Green Bay for his sixth career PBA victory. The title game began with top-seeded Berardi holding a two-pin lead after three frames. Husted then put together a six-bagger beginning in frame four and had the victory iced by the time his string was stopped by a 5-7 split in the 10th frame. To get to the final match the 28-year-old Husted edged past Ricky Corona in the semifinal game, 204-190, despite struggling on the left lane. Corona, Diamond Bar, Calif., began the ESPN-televised finals by ousting Joe Firpo, Lake Worth, Fla., 193-163. Next, Corona sneaked past Ron Williams, Cahokia, III., 209-205, as all of the championship round participants played strike lines inside the fourth arrow.
