"Just another day at work," so David Ozio understated after winning three games and closing with three "must" strikes to capture the $150,000 Hammer Open at host Boulevard Bowl. Ozio edged leading qualifier Del Warren, 236-235, for his fourth PBA championship and pocketed the $27,000 first prize, richest on the PBA's Summer Tour. In the ESPN-televised championship round opening game, Amleto Monacelli flirted with a $25,000 True Value 300 game award against PBA career money leader Mark Roth (who also was the victim of Bob Benoit's 300). Monacelli, Venezuela, fired the first 10 strikes but left the 2-4-5 on his 11th shot and advanced against the Spring Lake Heights, N.J., pro, 287-247. Ozio then entered and Monacelli lost his touch, falling, 194-175. In the semifinal game, Tom Crites, Tampa, Fla., also took his lumps against Ozio, Vidor, Texas, and bowed, 268-171. Ozio began the championship match leaving an 8-10 split for an open frame, followed by a strike and three straight spares. Warren, Lake Worth, Fla., spared twice and then doubled to build his lead to 21 pins through five frames. He sat down with 235 following a closing four-bagger and felt pleased, not only with his efforts but also his chances against Ozio striking out to beat him by a pin.
