Mark Williams won his fifth PBA title in the $140,000 Fair Lanes Open, capped by a 229-180 championship game decision against leading qualifier Gil Sliker. Williams fought past three opponents in recording his first victory since 1986 and saddled Sliker with his eighth runnerup finish in a PBA singles event. A sign of things to come was immediately apparent for Sliker when he failed to convert the 2-4-5 leave in the first frame. Sliker also opened in his eighth and ninth stanzas, leaving 5-7 splits, while Williams stayed clean and coasted easily. In the opening match, Mike Taylor, Carlsbad, Calif., ousted Bob Benoit, Topeka, Kan., 206-185. Taylor was making his second appearance ever in the championship round and Benoit was competing in the ABC Sports finals for the second consecutive week. Enter Williams, Beaumont, Texas, hungry for victory and his match with Taylor was a beauty. Taylor began with a four-bagger, spared and then strung three more. Williams opened with a strike, spare and then launched a seven-bagger to come from behind and advance, 259-246. Brian Voss, Tacoma, Wash., was next for Williams and Voss was hoping to collect his third title in the last five weeks. Four open frames proved his undoing, including one in which he hit his ankle. Despite bowing, 228-190, Voss topped the $100,000 mark in yearly earnings with his $8,000 payday.
