Palmer Fallgren ended an eight-year hiatus from the PBA winner's circle with a 226-210 victory over Don Genalo and captured the $140,000 King Louie Open. Fallgren earned $24,000 for his third PBA crown. For the second straight week, all five championship finalists ended in the positions where they qualified for the ABC Sports telecast. Also for the second consecutive week Genalo was frustrated in quest of his seventh PBA victory. Leading qualifier Fallgren opened his game with a double. Genalo began with a spare and left the 6-7-10 split in his second frame but converted to keep close. He then strung three strikes before failing to convert the 3-10 in his sixth frame, which admittedly proved his undoing. Fallgren confidently closed the match after Genalo's miscue, wrapping up the title for good with a "wall shot" strike in the 10th frame. Genalo pocketed $13,000 as runnerup, but would have to vie for dominance at King Louie West Lanes another year. In the opening game, Mark Williams, Beaumont, Texas, bested Edmond, Oklahoma's Tony Westlake, 244-212. Leroy Bornhop, St. Charles, Mo., then took the measure of Williams, 212-162, before bowing to Genalo, 234-223. Fallgren, Sacramento, Calif., gladly relinquished his weekly role as statistician for ABC-TV to test his competitive skills on the lanes. He also cited the atmosphere of the week as "fateful" toward his success with good friend and Pro Bowler's Tour announcer Chris Schenkel being inducted in the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame earlier in the week.
