Tom Crites' chances of winning his second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title in 1987 looked bleak after he entered the fray in the semifinal match. However, the Tampa, Fla., native, wearing lizard-skin bowling shoes, slithered out of trouble and downed Wayne Webb and Marshall Holman to capture the $135,000 Budweiser Touring Players Championship before an NBC-TV audience at Taylor Lanes. Although Crites topped Holman, 221-205, for the $23,000 winner's check, it was doubtful he would even advance to the final match after the first four frames of his semifinal game against Webb. Crites began that game with an open frame while Webb struck in three of the first four frames. When Webb's fortunes turned sour Crites took a four-pin lead in the seventh frame and sealed the win with a closing four-bagger. In the title game with 20-time PBA champion Holman, Crites opened with three strikes and never trailed. Holman did win the prestigious George Young Memorial High Average Award for the year with a 216.80 norm. In earlier matches, Webb, Merritt Island, Fla., had gained the semifinal berth by beating Ron Palombi Jr., Erie, Pa., 229-217, after Palombi had opened the championship round by eliminating David Ozio, Vidor, Texas, 220-185.
