Leroy Bornhop achieved a hard-fought goal when he survived a low-scoring championship round to take the $27,000 top prize and his first PBA championship in the $150,000 Budweiser Classic. Bornhop, 27, downed top-seeded Amleto Monacelli, 169-160, in the title game after getting past Mark Williams and Dave Husted in his previous two matches at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace. The championship round bean typically enough with Williams, Beaumont, Texas, rattling off strikes on eight of his last nine shots to rout Chris Warren, Dallas, 235-169. In the final frame Monacelli converted a spare, then struck to force Bornhop to mark for the championship. Bornhop converted a 2-pin for a spare and rolled nine on his fill ball to claim victory and a spot in the 1988 Firestone Tournament of Champions. History was made during the week when Mark Roth surpassed Earl Anthony on the PBA's all-time leading money earnings list. Roth picked up $2,800 for finishing 10th, surpassing Anthony's career total by $2,210 with a lifetime total of $1,276,231.
