NUMBER 7 PBA INVITATIONAL
AMF O'Connor Bowl West, Toronto, Canada, Aug 24-26, 1987
Roth Rules Invitational
Mark Roth won his second consecutive PBA tournament bowled and in the process moved to within $3,966 of Earl Anthony's all-time PBA money earnings mark. Roth defeated Venezuela's Amleto Monacelli, 258-202, in the inaugural Number 7 PBA Invitational, a unique 16-man event featuring 12 top professional bowlers selected from the PBA point list and four Canadian amateurs competing in a single elimination bracket format. Roth earned $16,889 for his four match game victories and ran his career money figure to $1,270,055. Anthony looms just ahead with $1,274,021. Roth, Spring Lake Hts., N.J., had last competed in the Greater Buffalo Open on Aug. 12, which he captured for his 33rd PBA crown. For Monacelli, this was his eighth runnerup finish in as many championship matches. Roth began the tournament's 15th and final game with the first seven strikes and had the title well in hand following Monacelli's open sixth frame. The next goal immediately facing Roth was the $100,000 (Canadian) perfect game incentive offered by sponsoring Rothmans, Benson & Hedges, Inc., but he was thwarted by a ringing 10-pin on his next attempt. Roth nearly was ousted in the event's very first game, but Canadian amateur Steve Lee, Sudbury, Ontario, opened in his eighth, ninth and 10th frames and Roth advanced, 200-174.
