Rowdy Morrow and senior partner Mickey Spiezio came through in the clutch to collect their first Professional Bowlers Association championships by triumphing In the $140,000 Kessler Senior/Touring Pro Doubles Championship. Morrow/Spiezio defeated crowd favorites Marc McDowell and Dick Weber, 217-204, to split the $28,000 winner's check. Top-seeded Morrow had put the pressure on Weber to notch the first two strikes in the 10th frame with a closing three-bagger and then watched as Weber's first attempt went high, leaving the 4-7. The first game of the finals ended on a bizarre note. McDowell and Weber faced what seemed to be inevitable elimination when Dennis Jacques and Chet Dziedzina needed only a mark in the 10th frame to advance, but Jacques was stunned with the "big four" split on his first shot and could not convert, giving Weber/McDowell the match, 202-193. Next up for the "born again" McDowell/Weber duo were Sweden's Mats Karlsson and Bill Beach, who bowed 205-180, despite a closing three-bagger by Karlsson. Ron Palombi and Los Schissler were the next to try McDowell/Weber, but fared no better and exited by the count of 220-201.
