Brian Voss snapped a six-tournament winless streak as leading qualifier in defeating Amleto Monacelli, 245-219, to capture the Southern California Open. Monacelli's ill fortune in championship matches continued, as he finished runnerup for the seventh time in his PBA career, still seeking his first title in six years on tour. "I liked my performance today under pressure," Voss continued, "and I always prefer being involved in close matches, where I must execute to be rewarded." The title game was tied through six frames, but then Monacelli left the 3-6-9-10 and failed to convert in his seventh frame. Voss then struck in his eighth and ninth frames and needed only to avoid disaster in the 10th to clinch his fourth championship and the $17,000 first prize. Voss moved to seventh place on the PBA's yearly money list with $78,283. The ESPN-televised championship round at Active West Town Square Lanes began with Monacelli topping Dave Arnold, Campbell, Calm, who was competing in his first championship finals, 268-256. Monacelli's strike fast continued against Rowdy Morrow, St. Louis, whom he bombed, 258-193. Next up for Monacelli was local favorite Mark Baker, Garden Grove, Calif., but Monacelli prevailed, 235-195, to advance to the championship match.
