Thompson was one of the pioneers of the PBA during its infancy. A Touring Pro during the 60's, Thompson worked in every phase of the bowling industry from sales and marketing to management and ownership. He was the long-time Director of the PBA's Headquarters Region and a member of the PBA Executive Board. He also served on the PBA's Investment Advisory Committee and the Steering and Education Committees. He also oversaw the Al Thompson Scholarship Fund for junior bowlers.
